Garmin Personal API reads your current activities but does not send workouts from ChatGPT to your watch

Garmin now gives every user a free Personal API key for their own activity and health data. The Training API for workouts on the watch is not included, and Garmin offers no MCP server. With Tredict, ChatGPT, Claude and Mistral send training plans to your Garmin watch and analyse your entire training history.

Garmin has reopened its Connect developer program with three access tiers. The Personal tier is free and gives you API access to your own activity and health data. It reads your data, but it does not send workouts to your watch and it does not connect ChatGPT or Claude.

With Tredict, anyone can connect Garmin to ChatGPT without technical knowledge, analyse their Garmin activities and create training plans for their Garmin watch. Tredict is connected to Garmin through the official Garmin API, the future Enterprise API, and to ChatGPT through the official Tredict ChatGPT Plugin.

Step-by-step guide from the first connection to the training plan on your watch

Create an AI training plan for your watch from your Garmin training data

Activity and health data, pull only

According to Garmin's overview, the Personal tier covers activity data as JSON and FIT files as well as health data and women's health data as JSON. You retrieve your personal API key on the Garmin Connect website and generate access tokens with it. Garmin delivers the data pull only, so your own script has to fetch it. On top of that, it only delivers your current activities and not your past training history. With Tredict, by contrast, you have access to your entire training history.

No Training API and no MCP server

The Personal tier does not include the Training API. This is the interface that puts structured workouts into your Garmin calendar and onto your watch. Garmin offers it from the Starter tier for businesses upwards. A training plan that an AI creates from your personal data therefore does not reach your watch.

Garmin does not offer an MCP server. DC Rainmaker calls the new tiers "an MCP level of sorts…minus actually creating an MCP". To use your personal key with ChatGPT or Claude, you have to write your own MCP server, run it and connect it to the AI assistant.

Tredict connects Garmin with ChatGPT and Claude

  • You connect the official Garmin API in Tredict with your regular Garmin login, without an API key, access tokens or a server of your own. Since 2020, Tredict has been connected through Garmin's official OAuth API, which will be called the Enterprise API in a couple of months. Tredict receives your activities from Garmin Connect and imports your complete Garmin history.
  • You add the official Tredict ChatGPT Plugin to ChatGPT with a single click, and it is available in your chat right away, also with a free ChatGPT account. Claude connects through the Tredict MCP Server easily with a few clicks.
  • Tredict sends the workouts and training plans the AI creates to your Garmin calendar via the Garmin Training API, and from there onto your watch. If you or the AI rearrange something, Tredict withdraws the affected workouts from your watch and Garmin calendar, without leaving duplicates behind.
  • Besides your activities, the AI gets the values Tredict calculates from them, such as effort values, capacity values like FTP and lactate threshold, your zone model and your zone distributions over weeks and months.
